What is Orienteering (P1,M1)
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport based activity. Participants use an accurate, detailed orienteering map and compass to enable them to find specific map references and collect letters and numbers which make a long word. There are numbers dotted around the orienteering map and people have to use their map reading skills to find the letters according to the map they have been given. This activity could be a general walk in the woods or as a competitive sport.
Pt of M1:
To be able to participate in orienteering efficiently, orienteers need high level map reading skills. This is similiar to hiking as they will need to plan the route before starting out. Orienteers will need to have a fair amount of aerobic fitness and stamina to allow them to complete the activity quickly and efficiently. This stamina and fitness is required for mountain biking, otherwise riders will find this activity extremely difficult. In orienteering, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking, they all have a start and finish point. Similiar waterproof and cool clothing can be worn in both orienteering and hiking, depending on the weather.
I believe there is mainly one difference in orienteering. It is the only sport in which participants are required to find specific points by following the map.
What equipment do you need?
Various basic equipment is needed to be able to participate in Orienteering, such as:
1. Orienteering map: This enables orienteers to find the specific point.
2. Footwear suitable for 'muddy' use: Suitable footwear makes sure that orienteers have a large amount of grip to reduce the chances of getting injured.
3. First Aid: Basic first aid kit such as plasters and anticeptic wipes.
4. Compass: For navigational purposes.
5. Pens, pencils and notepad: To enable orienteers to write down the letter they have found and to work out what the word is.

Skills and techniques required for orienteering (P3)
-
Map reading: Being able to read a map competently allows people to participate in orienteering efficiently and effectively. Map reading is essential as orienteering is a sport that requires navigational skills to journey from one point to another
-
Communicational skills: Communication skills are developed by good leadership, taking into account peoples views and opinions and being aware of different points of view
-
Problem Solving: Problem solving could include finding an alternative route if a safety issue arises, for example unforseen livestock or natural landscape change, such as flood/rockfall blocking route
-
Preparation: Ability to forsee and plan avoidance strategies for potential hazards. For example, weather issues: waterproof clothing/footwear, sunscreen, food and water, and a spare map. Terrain: considering conditions and risks. Phone: allows members to call the emergency services if needed, or simply inform any issues to the instructor/leader. First Aid: considering potential need for treatmeant and survival in difficult conditions.
The British Orienteering Federation (BOF) is the national sport governing body for orienteering. It was founded in June 1967 and is a member of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). In the late 80s, BOF also collaborated with the BBC for an episode of the CBBC program 'Grangehill'.
