Unit 9: Outdoor and adventurous expeditions
The different types of expeditions available (P1):
Individual Expeditions:
Individual Expeditions are performed solely by an individual person. This person could however require help to prepare and organise them for the expedition ahead. The entire expedition has to be performed by one person at all times.
Professional explorers, such as Ben Saunders, may partcipate in this type of expedition. Ben accomplished a 240 kilometre solo expedition to the North Pole.
Educational Expeditions:
Educational Expeditions are generally managed by schools, colleges, universities, public services cadets and clubs. The majority of planned expeditions in this category are performed in groups, but they can be done solo. These planned expeditions are usually done for educational purposes to allow students, parents and teachers to gain knowledge and experience of certain topics.
Military Expeditions:
Military Expeditions can either be completed on a single or multi-day expedition, it generally depends on the operation and task that has been set. These expeditions are carried out for training, humantarian aid, rescue and providing a military base. These tasks are performed in groups to become more professional and to familarise soldiers with the difficult environments they will be working in.
In 2012, the British Public Services went to the Antartic for the first joint expedition. This group involved 24 members of the British Services who explored the environment to improve their professionalism and to get used to the surroundings for future tasks. They had a goal to raise money for the charity, Help for Heroes.
Corporate Expeditions:
Corporate Expeditions are performed by people who are sponsored by different organisations or companies. Expeditions within this category are usually performed within a group to progress their team building and cohesion skills. A lot of buisnesses and companies want their employees to maintain their relationship between each other which could improve their work performance at the workplace. Corporate expeditions may be completed for charities, such as Help for Heroes.
In March 2010, sixty Virgin Atlantic staff departured from London and visited Nairobi to climb Mount Kenya. This was done to raise money for their village appeal and to progress the workers teamwork skills.
Compare and contrast four different types of expedition (M1):
There are many similarities and differences between the above expedition types, for example:
Similarities:
One similarity between the four expedition types is they all have a definiate objective for participation. This means each one requires to
participation. The educational, corporate and military expeditions are performed within a group of people. These are done for personal growth and development to help improve workers performance, and to provide an opportunity for students learning something new. Also, they require high levels of teamwork and communication skills to ensure efficiency is shown. Each one includes a start and a finish point whilst performing them. The educational, military and corporate expeditions help to develop participants teamwork which is needed in the majority of workplaces as the completion rate is usually at a higher level when showing teamwork. All of the expeditions can be completed on a multiday expedition. A multiday expedition is when participants perform an activity over two or more days. Also, some people perform adventurous activities using any of the above expedition types to raise money for a charity of their choice. They could do this by creating a website for people to donate money or to download flyers for people to record who and how much is donated.
Differences:
With regards to the above expedition types, there are some differences. Each expedition have slightly different aims and objectives. For example, the military expedition is used to improve physical and mental skills in the Armed Forces, such as the British Army. The Virgin Atlantic organisation use corporate expedition to help improve the employees team building and cohesion skills. Each one have their own seperate purpose. The educational expedition type for example is mainly performed for educational purposes for students and staff to improve their interpersonal skills, such as communication and teamwork. The military and corporate expeditions are aimed at the older age group. This is because of the various objectives and contents included which could be too dangerous for the younger age group to perform. Also, I believe the military expeditions are usually tougher and more intense due to the training, compared with the individual, educational and corporate expeditions.
