Camping Expedition (18th April - 20th April 2016)

Performing Camping Expedition:

Camping can be defined as "the activity of spending a holiday living in a tent." Our camping destination was located at a camp site near Porlock, Devon. It was situated directly opposite the Hawknest Combe footpath, connecting Pool Bridge campsite and Horner.

We had our camping equipment waiting for us at the campsite, ready to set up. When we completed our first hiking expedition, I believe I experienced a number of strengths and identified areas for improvements:

Strengths:

I provided high levels of communication because I have had a lot of camping experience in the past. I wanted to use my knowledge and experience to assist my teammates with organising and generally setting up camp, e.g. structuring the tents and preparing the cooking appliances and ingredients. This allowed our team to set up camp efficiently and quickly. Once our group had finished eating and using the equipment, I offered to washup ready for them to be re-used. I wanted to get all of the washing up completed as quickly as possible so we could concentrate on getting ourselves ready for the two days ahead. In my opinion, I think my tenting accommodation was organised and tidy the majority of the time. This meant I was able to find my personal belongings easily, without unpacking my hiking rucksack which causes hassle. Also, I believe my voice volume was appropiate for the environment we were camping in. By communicating in a 'noisey' manner could disrupt other camp users which is disrespecful.

Areas for improvements:

However, eventhough the majority of the time our area was tidy, there were times when the tent was untidy on the outside. It had general waste products being left after we had fininished cooking which is disrespectful towards the campsite owner. When I wasn't situated at the campsite, I sometimes kept my personal belongings, such as wallet and mobile phone, at the campsite. However, I did not pack them away securely which meant there could have been a possibility they could have been stolen. In the future, I will ensure I have available a lockable product, this way I am able to lock my personal belongings away securely. There was a serious situation when one of our team member's was preparing some food extremely close to a fire, and they didn't set up the gas stove correctly, this caused an immediate large flame. In my opinion, I didn't react fast enough to resolve the situation, but I have never experienced this before which meant I didn't really know what to do. Instead I informed my lectures which took a long period of time which could have had serious concequences. Also, once our group had finsihed using all of the cooking equipment for example, I did not educate the other students to clean and pack away their own cooking equipment when they had finished using them. This meant in some areas the campsite looked unprofessional, and could possibly attract animals to the campsite.
